About

I am Robert Herd and I work as a Tour Manager on railway holidays. I currently work with travel brands Great Railway Journeys and Rail Discoveries. I am married with two daughter. When I am not on working on a tour I spend most of my time travelling with my wife Matilda. We we travel together we blog as TravellingHerd. Click here to see our blog.

I started my career, in computer training delivering courses throughout the UK and Europe. I finished my formal career with 12 years as a Computing Teacher in a South London comprehensive school.

I have had the travel, and train, bug ever since my teens when I spent summer holidays Interrailing. I have travelled extensively over the years for work and pleasure. As a teacher, I would normally spend 4 weeks of my summer holidays on long-distance rail journeys around Europe.

My favourite two places that I have visited recently are Iceland, for the scenery, and Malta, for the buildings and history. I wouldn’t say it is a ‘favourite’ place but it is, in my view, one place that everyone should visit once in their lives – Auschwitz-Birkenau. I have taken tour parties there a number times and every time I cry.

When not touring I enjoy travelling, watching rugby, drinking beer and working on my house.

Travel Advice: When travelling on a long-distance train journey, don’t sit and watch a movie or read a book. Instead, gaze out of the window and enjoy the scenery.

One of my favourite railways of the world is the narrow gauge Darjeeling Railway in the Himalayan region of India.
